If you have a storage barn or are thinking about potentially getting one, there are some great ideas for storage and some not so great ideas. So, what should you absolutely NOT store in your storage shed?
- Don't store extra paint in your storage shed. The excess heat could cause the chemicals and liquid to evaporate faster than normal and change the consistency of the paint over time.
- Don't store pet food in your shed. You don't want to attract all kinds of other creatures from Mother Nature or pesky insects that could be attracted by food stored in a shed.
- Don't store paper products in your storage shed. Cockroaches and other pesky bugs are attracted to paper products, so it's best to keep them stored indoors.
There are plenty of items, however, that you can store in your shed. First, let's start with some of the basics:
- Tools: Tools are a pretty obvious item safe for storage in your shed, but don't limit tool storage to a tool box or other shelving inside the shed. Think about adding pegs in your shed to maximize the use of the space and help keep your tools a bit more organized.
- Do invest in shelves. Shelves for your storage barn will help maximize your space and give you the greatest amount of square footage. Choosing shelves that are adjustable can also save a lot of space. Begin by storing things higher and working down. Doing so will also aid in maximizing all available space.
- Think outside of the typical tools and bikes for storing in your shed. Seasonal items are a great idea to store in a storage shed or barn. During the winter months, summer recreational items such as floats or even kayaks can be stored in the shed, while in the summer, winter items such as skis, snowboards, boots, shovels, snow blowers etc. are all a perfect fit for storage in a barn or shed.
There aren't a whole lot of absolute do's and don'ts when it comes to storage in a barn or shed, but using a little common sense can go a long way. Steer clear of storing chemicals that can overheat and food as a general rule and keep your creative juices flowing for other storage ideas.
